Hi and welcome to my blog. First of all thanks for listening to WSIG. I’ve worked in radio for many years and have never had as much fun as I’m having working here playing Real Country.
Last night I played a gig in Roanoke. I was driving home to Staunton on I-81. This is a trip that usually takes about an hour and a half. This one took three and a half hours! At mile marker 162 I came to a complete stop. It was raining heavily. I thought (as did my fellow motorists) that this would be one of those traffic situations where we creep along for about ten minutes until we arrive at the scene of the problem and then we're back on our way. Not to be. After about ten minutes I called my wife to tell her I would be late getting home. She went to the Virginia Transportation website and told me there was a tractor trailer accident at mile marker 165. at least I knew where the problem was. It was three miles ahead of me. After another five minutes I decided to turn off my motor. I sat there for the next hour and twenty minutes before we began to move. Fortunately I had a couple bottles of water with me and a flashlight and some books to read. I passed the time thankful that I wasn't the one involved in the accident. Life could always be worse. I was grateful to get home safely.
I spent a couple days playing gigs in Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia and have safely returned home. I love playing music but the long drive is a bit taxing. The people I meet are very nice and friendly but navigating I-66 and the Capital Beltway takes intense concentration. I'm thrilled that I get to do two things that I really love...playing guitar and singing and working for WSIG. Life is good.
It was on May 6, 1935 that Country Music history was made in a most unusual place...New York City. In the ARC studios, Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter, his wife Sara Dougherty Carter along with his sister-in-law Maybelle Addington Carter gathered together and recorded "Can The Circile Be Unbroken". The Carter Family from Southwest Virginia began recording in 1927 at a studio in Bristol, Tennessee. Their first release was by the Victor Talking Machine Company. It was a two sided 78, "Wandering Boy" and "Poor Orphan Child". There are so many milestones in Country Music. The contributions of The Carter Family can never be understated.
It's May 3rd and we have a new voice on WSIG. Our brand new morning man is on the air! Cousin Amadeus made his Shenandoah Valley debut this morning. Amadeus has been working in radio for more than twenty years and brings a vast amount of experience and Country fun with him. When I came to the Shenandoah Valley in 2006 and began working for WBOP and WSIG I was immediately welcomed by our listeners. I told Amadeus that you would embrace him. And based on this morning's program, I can tell that you will. He had some very nice listeners call him today. I know he'll enjoy is Valley experience. I'm looking forward to working with him.
