Fritz's Blog

Hi and welcome to my blog.  First of all thanks for listening to WSIG.  I’ve worked in radio for many years and have never had as much fun as I’m having working here playing Real Country.

Valentine

Had a wonderful evening with my Valentine. Peggy and I went to a performance at the Staunton Center for the Performing Arts. It was called "Champagne, Chocolate and Love Songs". Met some great folks there and saw a terrific show. We don't go out on the town very often. It was nice to have a very special evening with my sweetheart.

Long Day

Spent the day and part of the evening in Richmond. Had four one hour gigs. A little tired but very happy to be able to do something I really love to do. Speaking of which, every Wednesday I host the open mic at Mockingbird in Staunton. There'sno admission and it's always a great evening of music. Stop by and let me know you're a WSIG listener!

Mr. Acuff

On February 5, 1938 Country Music experienced a seismic shift. It turned out to be a musical earthquake. That was the night Roy Claxton Acuff made his very first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. The following week WSM radio received tons of mail asking for the young man who sang The Great Speckled Bird to be invited back to the Opry. He was. He remained a fixture on the Opry Stage for the next four decades. Along with Fred Rose he founded the first major music publishing house in Nashville, Acuff-Rose Music. Among the prominent artist signed to Acuff-Rose were Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Lefty Frizzell, Don Gibson and many others. We lost Roy on November 23, 1992.

Everybody Leap!!

February has arrived and 2012 is a Leap Year. There will be 29 days this month. A Leap Year occurs every four years in order to get our calendars in sync with the Sun. Actually it only takes 364 days and 18 hours for the Earth to orbit the Sun. This is 6 hours short of 365 days or 364 and 3/4 days. That is why some of mankind's most brilliant minds (not mine or Uncle Johnny's by the way) decided a long time ago to add a full day to the calendar every four years. So this month we'll be back in sync with reality (not necessarily Uncle Johnny and me).

Here's an interesting tidbit. A person born on February 29th is called a "leapling" or a "leaper". Try going up to a stranger on February 29th and asking if they're a "leapling". Tip: don't do this in a bar to someone who has obviously been drinking. So here we are at the shortest month of the year and this year we get to enjoy it for 24 hours more. Life is good!
